What is DETEKT all about?

DETEKT is an Açores2030 project (ACORES2030-FEDER-01912600) that joins the Institute of Marine Research (IMAR) with @depth — an Azores-based cloud provider — to assess the feasibility of detecting sperm whale sounds on a fibre-optic cable, using the DAS (Distributed Acoustic Sensing) technology.

Approach

We will use a DAS interrogator to monitor a submarine cable situated between the islands of Faial and São Jorge, in the Azores, over a period of two months.

Controlled experiments with an underwater loudspeaker will reproduce sperm whale clicks with known emission parameters, such as sound source level and distance to the submarine cable.

Multi-sensor archival tags placed on animals in the vicinity of the submarine cable will enable investigating cable sensivity to real-life emissions.
