I use environmental DNA (eDNA), which is extracellular genomic traces shed by an animal into their environment, to non-invasively study marine communities and potential trophic interactions involving whale species throughout the Azores. In parallel, I analyze paired eDNA and biopsy samples from sperm whales to assess the feasibility of extracting sex, haplotype, and other population genetic information directly from seawater.
