The new tagging season is uppon us and we are in testing mode for Whale-Vision cam 2.0. We just subjected a new housing to a pressure equivalent to 1500 metres in our hyperbaric chamber and it performed flawlessly. Bring on these deep dives sperm whales!

We started a collaboration with Dr Petra Ditsche (Un. Bonn) and ClingTech Bionics to develop a suction cup bio-inspired by the Northern Clingfish (Gobiesox maeandricus) to increase attachment time of the Whale Vision camera. TAG ON!
We've deployed the Whale Vision tag on a sperm whale for the first time this morning! Due to contractutal terms with the project funders we cannot show you any footage, but Boy, Oh Boy! The tag stayed on a little shy of one hour but we got plenty information about the animal and the tag itself.

The researchers aboard R/V OceanXplorer came eye to eye with one of the sperm whale prey: we found several seven-arm octopuses (Haliphrom atlanticus) floating around the research area. Picture by Edie Widder.

The first camera protype is ready to go. The low light performance is amazing.
